COMMENT:

This is a pipe with lots of character. If you look carefully, you may see what really makes it a unique Freeform Billiard. If you looked at the shank, you would maybe expect a less curve on the mouthpiece; however, Radice made the mouthpiece bend slight more than expected, and yet the pipe looks quite balanced. Another nice feature is a naturally stained, smooth shank, which goes in contrast with the dark rusticated bowl. While the pipe is of truly feature weight, the tobacco chamber is quite large. A cleaner does pass through the entire pipe, but you may need to bend the tip of the cleaner slightly before inserting it (and hence the exclamation mark next to "Yes" above). As this pipe was not made specifically for my site, it had a pre-carbonized bowl. Marzio Radice was kind enough to remove the black coating to reveal the beautiful bare wood.

COMMENT:

This is quite an attractive and distinctive interpretation of the classic Poker. The pipe is stamped an extra "O", which stands for the beautiful light-colored wood insert, which is part of the mouthpiece. The flat bowl base is left in a natural smooth finish, and it exhibits some gorgeous Bird's Eye. As this pipe was not made specifically for my site, it had a pre-carbonized bowl. Marzio Radice was kind enough to remove the black coating to reveal the beautiful bare wood. You can see, there is a very think but long sandpit visible in the tobacco chamber. It's quite superficial and doesn't in any way, shape or form reduce the beauty and the value of the pipe. At least this one, you can see what you're buying. As promised, on this site, there is "nothing to hide".

COMMENT:

In case you're wondering why this pipe is here rather than on the Flake Pipe page, let me confess: I made a mistake! I realized too late that the pipe is comparable in size to a Dunhill Group 4, which would make it very appropriate also for pressed tobaccos. Anyway, the shape is quite unique with its combination of the Billiard bowl and the square shank, followed by an elegant saddle mouthpiece, with a square base. The pipe is almost literally of feather weight, and in a way we can call it a "Nose Warmer" (the total length of the pipe is 126.5mm or almost 5 inches).

COMMENT:

We all know how many people out there who are always on the lookout for pipes in the Hawkbill shape. Radice has demonstrated on the years to be quite fond of this shape, and indeed we see Radice Hawkbills regularly though not as often as we would like to. In the last Radice update, there was one, and it was sold right away. Here is another one, this time in the rusticated finish, which means competition for it will be more severe. I wonder for how long it'll remain available! It's a pipe of this elegance and beauty that makes me regret the fact that I do not smoke any pipes but straight ones!

COMMENT:

Let me be brief: This pipe is MAGNIFICENT! It is, in every way, shape, and form, a Stack (Chimney). The bowl is a staggering 61mm (2.4 inches) tall, while the faux bamboo shank measures EXACTLY the same in length, which is a truly incredible coincidence. To complete the picture, the elegant tapered mouthpiece measures 57mm (2.25 inches) in length, and the outside bowl diameter is about 34mm (1.34 inches) in diameter. Judging by the slightly darker patina of the smooth briar, I can safely (but always guessingly) say that a particularly well-aged piece of briar was used to make this pipe. For a lot of people, the sophisticated Radice faux bamboo shank is a deal sealer; add this to the fact that this pipe is a classic Stack, and you realize how much of a true find this pipe is.

COMMENT:

As you may know, the Bulldog is one of those few classic shapes that will always have a place in my heart, and more practically, in my collection. Technically this pipe is semi-rusticated, though it is graded as RIND. The entire bowl top and 25% of the shank is nothing but natural, smooth briar. What makes this pipe quite a classic Bulldog is the diamond shank and the diamond, tapered mouthpiece. Why did I then add the word "freeform"? Well, if you look carefully at the bowl "body", you notice that the outer side (the one opposite the one facing the shank) is slightly "tucked in". I know that most people would not agree with this view and would unhesitatingly describe the pipe as a truly classic Bulldog. I wouldn't argue with them. I simply try to point out the slightest of details about each pipe, even those minute details that the majority of people may not pick up or care about. It's my job, my duty, and above all, my pleasure.

COMMENT:

I've never, ever at any point in my life thought there would come a day when I would describe a Canadian (pipe) as Chubby! Well, the day has come and it is today. If we consider that the pipe has a Billiard bowl, a long, oval shank, and a short, tapered mouthpiece, then we automatically describe it as a Canadian. Not rocket science. However, in the case of this pipe, the bowl is robust and... chubby, and the faux bamboo shank is both high (16mm or 0.63 of an inch) and wide (21mm or 0.83 of an inch); all this I think is what gives ME the impression that the pipe is "fatter" or chubbier than a classic Canadian. What does this mean to you? It means that if you like the looks of this pipe, and you end up buying it, you will have gotten yourself quite a unique shape. In addition, the pipe is so representative of Radice's first-class craftsmanship and creativity; one of the biggest signs of this is, of course, the beautiful briarwood shank disguised as a bamboo one (faux bamboo).
