Radice Pipes: Oil-Cured, Twin-Bore

For the first time, I'm able to offer you the pipe series that Radice has been most renowned for: Oil-Cured & Twin-Bore pipes. These pipes go through a long and labor-intensive process during which are treated with natural oil and fitted with Radice's patented Twin-Bore mouthpieces. Here's an illustration of the Twin-Bore:
The idea of the Twin-Bore is to offer both easier draw and at the same time reduce the risk of tongue bite (irritation to the tonge and mouthpiece).
All these pipes are stamped "Oil Cured" ~ "T/B", plus the grade and the year of production. (Note the an Oil-Cured, Twin-Bore "Rind" pipe is called "Bark".)

COMMENT:

I've never, ever at any point in my life, thought there would come a day when I would describe a Canadian (pipe) as Chubby! Well, the day has come and it is today. If we consider that the pipe has a Billiard bowl, a long, oval shank, and a short, tapered mouthpiece, then we automatically describe it as a Canadian. Not rocket science. However, in the case of this pipe, the bowl is robust and... chubby, and the faux bamboo shank is both high (16mm or 0.63 of an inch) and wide (21mm or 0.83 of an inch); all this, I think, is what gives ME the impression that the pipe is "fatter" than a classic Canadian and hence the word "Chubby". What does this mean to you? It means that if you like the looks of this pipe, and you end up buying it, you will have gotten yourself quite a unique shape. In addition, the pipe is so representative of Radice's first-class craftsmanship and creativity; one of the biggest signs of this is, of course, the beautiful briarwood shank disguised as a bamboo one (faux bamboo). It doesn't stop there, the pipe is also Oil-Cured and Twin Bore. How about uniqueness wrapped up in more uniqueness!

COMMENT:

We all know how many people out there who are always on the lookout for pipes in the Hawkbill shape. Radice has demonstrated over the years to be quite fond of this shape, and indeed we see such Radice Hawkbills regularly though not as often as we would like to. in the last Radice update, there was one, and it was sold right away. Here is another one, this time in the a rusticated finish, which means competition for it will be even more severe. To add fuel to the fire, we have to remember two more facts about this pipe: (1) It is an Oil-Cured, Twin-Bore, and (2) It's a PANEL Hawkbill. I have never, ever offered a PANEL Hawkbill, nor have I even seen one. The bowl shows 8 different panels that are very delicately wrapped around the bowl; I find this combination of panels (flatness) and roundedness fascinating. I sometimes regret not being able to smoke bent pipes. This is how I feel when I see this pipe!

COMMENT:

Here's a Rhodesian that I would not hesitate for a second to describe as a Classic one. The whole issue lies within the upper part of the bowl, with the bowl top inward inclination at the right angle and to the right degree. The shank is round and the edge of it is aligned horizontally with the first groove around the bowl. The tapered mouthpiece is an excellent choice in this case, and it helped give the pipe a more classic appearance. Of course, this comment could never be complete if I didn't draw your attention to the magnificent rustication. As you may know, the word "BARK" refers to the rustication applied to only the Oil-Cured, Twin-Bore pipes; this type of rustication is a lot "coarser" than the usual, mainstream Radice rustication, and the result is a pipe finish that is absolutely fabulous to look at and, more important, to hold in the hand.

COMMENT:

I love this shape, and I had to admit that "Freeform Cherrywood" only touches the surface in this case. Considering that I had to use the word "Freeform", I could have as well used the work "Poker". As far as I know, the Poker is the classic shape, and the Cherrywood is a variation of it. I decided for the Cherrywood because of the slant, which is the bowl baseline. You see, that creates the effect that the bowl is leaning forward. An important element in the shape identity is the shank, which is quite long, concave in shape, and its base is above the bowl baseline. In other words, this pipe would make any maker proud, and more importantly, would most definitely be a great piece to add to any collection. Though the four pictures I'm offering are good and kind of show the beauty and uniqueness of the shape, I assure you that the pipe is a whole lot more impressive when you see it "face to face". I just love the incredibly beautiful rustication, and the colors are magnificent. I personally see this pipe as a testimony of Radice's long pipe making tradition, distinctive style, experience, creativity, and above all, the unbelievable value for the money his pipes offer.

COMMENT:

Every time I pick this pipe up, I check out the nomenclature. Why? Well, considering the incredibly Extra Large size, to me, the pipe had to be marked with "G" (for Extra Large). To my surprise, the pipe doesn't carry this magical letter in spite of the fact that it more than deserves it. Let me give you more measurements just to help you realize the true size of this pipe. The bowl is 60mm (2.36 inches) in height and 45mm (1.77 inches) in diameter! Of course, there is so much more that makes this pipe quite a catch. Of course, the shape is one of those distinctive features. Yes, the basic shape is that of the classic Dublin, but Radice really used his imagination when shaping the shank. I believe the pictures will do a better job explaining how the shank is. I fully and whole-heartedly agree with Radice's choice of a tapered mouthpiece. I think the result could not have been more elegant and classy.

COMMENT:

As you may know, this is the first time that Radice launches his Rusticated Natural (Rusticata Naturale) finish. I have dedicated an entire page to the five pieces that Radice kindly made especially for my site. The pipe you see is probably the ONLY ONE IN EXISTENCE and is most definitely the FIRST ever BARK grade in this completely natural finish. It is marked BARK because the pipe has been Oil-Cured and comes with the Radice Twin-Bore. When you compare the looks of this pipe to the other five in the Natural finish (Natural Rind), you will realize how much darker this one is. The effect is obviously due to the pipe having been Oil Cured. It was the oil treatment that gave the pipe this unique patina. The uniqueness of the pipe is further established by the addition of the famous Radice faux bamboo shank. In other words, this pipe has entered the Radice pipe making history, and I envy whoever will end up owning it.

COMMENT:

We both know how tough it is to get a pipe with an attractive and well-executed sandblast, let alone one with an absolutely breathtaking Ringblast. This pipe is most definitely one of the most beautiful sandblasted pipes I have seen to date. The blasting was done so carefully and yet so confidently. The result is a blast that managed to penetrate the grain as deeply as possible, removing all the soft spots, without causing any deformities. Some shapes are harder to sandblast than others, and that is because they usually have small and delicate features that risk being compromised when exposed to the sand jet. The Rhodesian is one of those shapes due mainly to the grooves, and I'm happy to report that, as you can see, the pipe has managed to maintain its personality and characteristic and has won the battle against the ruthless sand jet. Radice then decided to add a smooth, natural briarwood shank insert, which kind of eases the transition from the rustication shank to the black acrylic of the mouthpiece.

COMMENT:

I have written some seriously (and sincerely) glorifying comments about all the above pipes. They are truly impressive, each in its own unique way and for specific reasons, which I hope I managed to explain. Though I'm impressed with all the above pipes, I'm simply overwhelmed by the uniqueness this one here, and that is why I decided to make it the last one on the page. I know my limitations and, more importantly, the limitations of the written word. For this reason, I hope the angles at which I photographed the pipe manage to show you how unique this pipe is. Let me just give you a few more measurements to help you realize how large the pipe is. The bowl 56mm (2.21 inches) in height and 47mm (1.85 inches) in diameter. The bowl and shank extend horizontally, from the outer bowl wall to the edge of the shank where the mouthpiece joins in, a distance of 90mm (3.54 inches). Besides the breathtaking blast, Radice carved the bowl rim to give the effect of the famous "candle drip", and I must admit that the result exceeds in beauty and elegance the wildest imagination. I can't tell you how happy and proud I am to have found this pipe before others did and to be able to offer it to you for this great price.
