COMMENT:

To justify why I opted for "Stack/Chimney" and not something along the lines of "Freeform Billiard", here are the measurements of the shank and bowl: The shank is about 35mm (1.38 inches) long and the bowl is about 55mm (2.17 inches) high. This is what the Stack is all about. Though Radice used the usual walnut stain, the pipe accepted it in its own unique way, resulting in a light-colored, bright, orange-brown combination, which I find quite attractive. The pipe has a few visible sandpits, but the grain is quite intriguing, with a combination of Flame Grain, Bird's Eye, with no bald spots. What gave the pipe the extra nomenclature "O" is the elaborate, multicolor wooden inserts in the mouthpiece. Though the pipe is impressively light in weight, it has quite a lot of wood and the tobacco chamber is HUGE (see the measurements above).

COMMENT:

You might be surprised that I opted for "Freehand" to describe this pipe. To tell you the truth, I gave it a lot of thought. The Oom Paul (Hungarian) came to mind, then the Freeform Dublin, etc., but nothing was convincing or accurate enough for me, and hence, the vague term "Freehand". Technically speaking, this pipe is a symphony, in its design, but above all, in its execution. It has an endless number of features, each of which is sufficient to make a pipe quite distinctive and one-of-a-kind. The grain is nothing short of great Bird's Eye on one side, and some fabulous Flame Grain on the other. The shank itself is quite sophisticated with those attractive cuts, twists, and bends. The mouthpiece is an Army Mount, and it comes in a design that recalls those old Peterson mouthpieces. You won't believe how effortlessly a cleaner goes through the entire pipe!

COMMENT:

I don't recall having ever had as many reasons to add the word "freeform" to a shape definition as I do in this case. We first have to agree that because of the Billiard bowl, the long "un-oval" shank, and the short tapered mouthpiece, the one classic shape that comes to mind is the Liverpool. Let's now talk about the deviations from the classic Liverpool. First, the shank is of a very unusual shape, mainly tapered and square, and with a fluted end. The tapered mouthpiece is indeed short, but it is also ever so slightly bent. The result of all these deviations is a one-of-a-kind shape, and it should be a non-brainer for anyone who likes long-shanked pipes. Finally, I just need you to check out how light in weight the pipe is as well as how beautiful the grain is, particularly the Bird's Eye.

COMMENT:

You might be wondering why I see this shape as a Bulldog rather than a Rhodesian. Well, if you look at the uppermost part of the bowl, you notice that the walls are too upright to lead to a Rhodesian. I think that part of the bowl should lead only to the Bulldog definition. As for the word "chubby", it's more an impressionistic view. Having said that, I believe that when you measure the pipe, you get a mathematical confirmation of that impression. The bowl is 51.5mm (a litte over 2 inches) in height, and 48.5 (1.91 inches) in diameter. The pipe comes with the classic diamond shank and the tapered mouthpiece. The grain is excellent, with the Bird's Eye being quite dominant and well-pronounced.
