COMMENT:

This is indeed quite a unique shape, and the word "freeform" could not be well deserved than in this case. As a matter of fact, I would be quite happy with the word "freehand". The basic idea is the Dublin, turned in a Bell, squashed from the sides to create an oval shape, and the entire bowl is slanted and canted forward. Though the pipe is small (comparable to a Dunhill Group 3), the bowl has so much wood, and the wall thickness does indeed reach a maximum of 17mm. The rustication follow the beautiful, deep style that Posella is known for. The bowl rim show about 50% of it in small, brown finish, and you can see the gorgeous Bird's Eye there.

COMMENT:

Did my shape definition come as a surprise? Well, I do admit that the shape very much resemble that of the Bulldog, but when you look carefully, you realize that this is not the case. I believe what gives the impression of the Bulldog is the bowl shape, to a lesser degree, and the diamond shank, to a greater extent. Plus, how could it be a Bulldog without the two grooves around the bowl?! I very much like the smooth, natural wood on the outer half of the bowl top and the edge of the shank. The pipe is of a good medium-large size, and yet it's so light in weight. The saddle mouthpiece would play an important role in making this pipe as comfortable as they come.

COMMENT:

In the 9 years that I have been selling pipes, professionally, I have never used the combination "Apple" and "Oval" to define a shape. Let me set the record straight. I do not wish in any way, shape, or form to use the term "Oval Apple" as a distinct shape, let alone wish to introduce it into the standard and well-accept shape chart. I do believe that the basic idea behind the shape is that of the Apple, and I also believe that the ovalness of the bowl is an integral part of the overall shape design, and hence its appearance in the shape definition. How oval? Well, the bowl measures 44x53mm (1.73x2.1 inches); the height of the bowl is 47mm (1.85 of an inch). The total length of the pipe is 135mm (5.32"), which is short that what you would expect. The tapered mouthpiece is as comfortable as you would want it to be, if not more, and I'm sure this pipe will prove to be a great smoking pipe (just a feeling, or an educated guess)!
