COMMENT:

I know it's not quite an egg, but I just didn't feel like going for "freeform Egg", when the "egg" is simply a "Freeform Apple". I would be happy with Freehand, though it is not as accurate. Whatever the shape is, it's quite attractive and is in a lot of ways, quite unique. The "walnut" is Mastro's most recent innovation. The idea is a smooth pipe with a nice grain and with a touch of a light brown stain. The grain on this pipe is very, very nice, with mainly Flame Grain around the bowl and shank. Note the very elaborate mouthpiece. Mind you, the shank doesn't have an insert. That acrylic base is actually part of the mouthpiece.

COMMENT:

I wouldn't argue with you if you decided to call this shape a "Calabash". What insist on is the word "freeform", and that is due to the diamond shank which is quite a deviation from the classic Dublin or Calabash. It is that only deviation from the classic shape that makes this pipe the very unique one it is. Mastro didn't stop there; they added an inscribed diamond silver band, and an Army Mount. The grain is excellent for this entry smooth grade, and the Bird's Eye on the bowl top is simply gorgeous.

COMMENT:

To call this pipe a "Freeform Bulldog" must be the biggest understatement I have made so far in the year 2006 (and it's only the beginning of the year)! There is so much going on in this pipe, and the shape is simply most intriguing and quite unusual. Having said that, I believe that the shape definition I offered above is the most accurate. There are several features that prove that the pipe deviates from the classic Bulldog. For example, the bowl is canted forward, the bowl base is flat and oval in shape, and the bowl starts with a diameter of 25mm at the base, becomes 35mm halfway through and then reaches 45mm at the bowl top. The pipe looks absolutely fabulous when it's standing on its own on a flat surface. The hosts one of elaborate mouthpieces that Mastro developed recently, and I must admit the mouthpiece does play an important and successfully role in making the pipe the unique one it is.

COMMENT:

The reason why I decided that "Calabash" is more accurate than a "Dublin" is the rather tall, slim bowl, and the tight angle between the bowl and the shank. The diamond-shaped shank comes with a diamond, inscribed silver band, followed by a black acrylic of the same shape. Then you have the Army Mount, and the elaborate and uniquely shaped mouthpiece. In terms of shape design and execution, this pipe fully deserves my full and unconditional admiration.
