COMMENT:

I can't believe I finally got to describe a pipe as Zulu or Woodstock after so many years in the business. That tells you how rare this shape has become! And, believe me, I'm not pushing my luck or anything with this shape definition. What I did is look at this shape and compare it to pipes and pictures of pipes of the classic Zulu (Woodstock). The similarities were indeed evident enough for me to go ahead and define it as such. You might want to call it a Freehand Dublin (as I did initially), but you'll soon realize it's a far cry from that shape. Notice the beautiful Bird's Eye on the bowl top. Another interesting fact about this pipe is that the tobacco chamber is conical, starting at the rim at 22.5mm and going down an approximate 16-17mm at the chamber base. A lot of people believe this is conducive to an even and regular combustion.

COMMENT:

I realize that this pipe offers more food for thought than a straightforward Freeform Stack (or Chimney). Contrary to the Billiard-like bowl shape of the classic Stack/Chimney, this one is shaped more like an egg or elongated apple. The certainty about its being a Stack is based on one key characteristic: The shank is 33mm in length, while the bowl is 56mm in height. The tobacco chamber is HUGE, and yet the pipe is quite light in weight and so well balanced. I really appreciate the choice of the tapered mouthpiece, as opposed to saddle, since this gives an evident classic touch. Here's another interesting fact: The entire bowl shows only ONE TINY sandpit, which you can see (if you look very closely) on the bowl top. If you like long smokes in a straight pipe that doesn't break your jaw, this is definitely a winner.

COMMENT:

This is most definitely one of my favorite pipes in this assortment and one that offers the best value for money. If it weren't for the little rustication on the two sides of the shank, this pipe would have most definitely jumped the Jack grade and found its rightful place among the pipes with the honorable Queen grade. Apart from the exceptional grain which you can easily see in the pictures, the pipe comes in an extremely elegant shape. I love the way the bowl, the shank, and the mouthpiece unite to create one entity that is both elegant and visually balanced. In addition, I believe the bend Tonino put on the mouthpiece couldn't be more well thought out and executed. Note also that the tobacco chamber is not really following the inclination you see on the bowl; it is rather as upright and straight as on a regular shape, which means that any combustion problems that are generally associated with the Horn are not an issue here.

COMMENT:

I had the intention of describing this as a straightforward Apple, but then I realized that the difference in diameter between the bowl base and rim is too great for a classic Apple. Indeed, if I look at the bowl shape, I see more an egg than an apple. I wouldn't argue with you if you decided to call it an Egg, but for a reason I hope I will find out in this life of mine, I see the description "Freeform Apple" more accurate! Are we still friends?!
The pipe has some of the best grain pattern I have ever seen within this Bishop grain. The grain is mainly Flame all around the bowl, with the same pattern being transferred onto the shank, with the top and bottom sides exhibiting fabulous Bird's Eye. Oh, I forgot, to add yet another touch of sophistication to the shape design, Tonino made the bowl slightly oval! Can you please put all that in your pipe and smoke it!
