COMMENT:

The term "nose warmer" is used to describe pipes that are particularly short; the idea is that because the pipe is short, and so the bowl is relatively close to one's nose, the heat generated by the burning tobacco warms the nose! The total length of the pipe is 108mm or 4.3 inches. Apart from this feature, and as far as the shape is concerned, I have to admit that I couldn't think of a more accurate term to describe this pipe. I thought of the Pot and the Dublin, but nothing convinced me, and hence, the decision to go with Freehand. I like the flat, overall shank, and how it was made to get along with the round bowl; Max, once again, clearly dedicated some time and attention to creating a tight angle between the bowl and shank (the "neck" of the pipe). What is quite special about this pipe is that it comes with a handcut, Cumberland mouthpiece. You won't believe how delicate the slim the mouthpiece is, and I bet you it was a challenge for Max to shape it out of a whole Cumberland rod. Another elegant characteristic of this pipe is the warm, walnut stain, which managed to bring out the best of the grain, particularly the cluster of Bird's Eye on the bowl base. .

COMMENT:

I hope you will agree with me, to start with, that this shape is quite elegant. It looks fairly familiar, but when you start examining it closely, you realize that it has so many unique characteristics. The shape is quite unusual, though I stand by my shape definition, since I believe that the Apple is the closest classic shape to this one. There deviations from the classic Apple, however, are numerous. Most evidently, the bowl is slightly more "puffed up" than the classic Apple, and also, the shank is much longer than what you would expect of an Apple. The shank is not only quite long, but it is also of a flat, oval shape, and Max went a step further by adding a very think insert made of olivewood (with beautiful grain). The black, acrylic, tapered mouthpiece is also fitted with what appears to be a piece of colored vulcanite, and the Army Mount is another feature that needs to be pointed out. The grain primarily Flame-shaped, with, surprisingly, very little, if any, Bird's Eye. Though the pipe is of a medium size, and there is so much wood all over it, the weight is minimal, and I'm confident that it will be a pleasure to clench on it, if this is what you prefer.

COMMENT:

I think it is safe to assume, at this point, that Max Rimensi likes the Dublin shape! This pipe, though, is almost an accurate interpretation of the classic Dublin. The overall length of the pipe is only 121mm (4.76"), which officially makes it a "nose warmer". The pipe comes in a very vivid stain, which is a blend of golden and dark brown, and thanks to this color that the best of the grain was brought out. The grain is mainly Flame Grain around the bowl and Bird's Eye on the bowl top. The very special feature here is the mouthpiece, which is handcut from a vulcanite rod. My examination of the little details of the mouthpiece tells me that Max took his time making it, and the result is clearly an elegant and comfortable mouthpiece. So, if you consider the small size of the pipe and the comfortable mouthpiece, you see it could turn into a favorite pipe that you can keep in a pocket for those magical moments when you long for only a short, pleasurable smoke! And remember, with a mouthpiece like that, the pipe is very unlikely to be lost among other pipes; who would dare to snatch and claim it's his! Talk about a unique-looking pipe!
