COMMENT:

There are three different, yet similar, shapes that came to mind when I was trying to determine the shape definition here: The Poker, the Cherrywood, and the Volcano. Though I decided on the first one, I had to add the word "freeform" due to the obvious reasons. The pipe shape is indeed familiar, and yet, it's nothing that I have seen before. The bowl with its flat, round base and bowl shape is closest to the classic Poker, but the slanted outer wall and the high base (notice that the base is lower than the shank base) make it a lot more than a simple Poker. Add to this equation the Lovat-like shank and saddle mouthpiece, and you got something quite especial. The bamboo shank is quite a treat, and it does take the pipe onto a whole new level of uniqueness. I've always liked the DG brown stain, and this pipe is no exception. The grain is a very attractive Flame Grain around the bowl, with some exquisite Bird's Eye on the bowl base.

COMMENT:

It takes one glimpse at this pipe to state with all confidence and in all sincerity that this is one very, very complex shape to conjure, let alone execute. This initial impression is confirmed over and over again, more and more, the more you look at the pipe. When I first picked up this pipe, Gabriele let me think it over for a while, and then he told a whole long story on some Roman monument that is at the core of the design idea. I was so wrapped up in my attempt to figure out the shape that I hardly heard what he said. I wish I remembered, but it would have taken a very long comment to relay what he said. The numerous pictures I'm offering will hopefully bring you closer to understanding the complexity of the shape and the sheer elegance and beauty that it offers. The beautiful brown stain is so well applied, and it does indeed bring out the best of the already excellent grain. The stain also stands in great contrast with the boxwood mouthpiece insert, followed by the black, tapered mouthpiece. As an always welcomed bonus, the pipe can rest on a flat surface on its own and without support.
