Important Note:   Some of the pipes on this page carry the unique stamp: "50/2". This marking was carried out on all the pipes produced in the year 2002. Bruto celebrates his 50th birthday, and hence the "50", and the 25th anniversary of his pipe making career, and hence the "/2".
The pipes carrying this stamp are clearly indicated within their table.

COMMENT:

This is indeed a very elegant Chubby Apple, with a special DC touch of artistry. "What's that touch?", you might be wondering! Well, I think, again, it's the way Bruto is able to make such a robust bowl and such a thick shank meet with such smoothness and gracefulness. There's one quite visible sandpit on the right hand-side of the shank (see last photo from left). On the other hand, the grain is very attractive all over the pipe, including the shank; it's pronounced, regular and consistent.

COMMENT:

The first thing about this pipe that drew my attention when I first saw it was the color. Though Bruto applied his usual stain, the pipe is darker than most of the pipes in the natural smooth category. I have a feeling, therefore, that this is an older piece of briar, and I wish I could it how the pipe acquires the famous patina over the years. Apart from this, the grain is very good and consistent all over the pipe, and the plateau top is impressively regular and tight. Another important factor is the extra light weight of the pipe, complemented with the elegant, thin and slim, saddle mouthpiece.

COMMENT:

There has to be an idea behind this shape, but to tell you the truth, I can't figure it out. Having said that, and once you've taken the time to examine the pipe, you start to realize that there's a solid design behind it. In other words, it wasn't born due to a pipe making mishap! One of the most unusual touches here is the little heel that is underneath the bowl and shank, where the two join. The grain is predominantly Bird's Eye with some Crossgrain. The first and last pictures illustrate the only design idea I could think of: An elephant's head, with the trunk up in the air. Neat, isn't it?

COMMENT:

Though this shape may appear simple and straightforward, believe me, upon closer inspection, you realize that such a first impression is inaccurate. I don't recall seeing a Don Carlos of this shape, and though I tried hard to describe it using familiar terms, I decided that it more than deserves the title "Freehand". The basic idea is that of an egg. The shank is diamond-shaped, and there is an elegant line running through underneath the bowl and shank. Note also the unique saddle mouthpiece Bruto made for this one! The bowl has so much wood all over, and yet the weight is much less than you would expect, and mind you, this pipe has a HUGE tobacco chamber. The grain is well-pronounced and regular all around the bowl and shank.
