COMMENT: If I wrote comments to help you buy the right pipe for yourself, I would need nothing but ONE picture to show you how incredible this pipe here is. Actually, no, maybe only a few words. I know you have seen this Cavicchi shape before, in this large size, but I bet you anything, you have never seen it in Cavicchi's highest grade, the 5C grade. I haven't! This Extra, Extra Large and Long Oliphant has become over the past few years one of Cavicchi's most sought-after shapes, and it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, especially those who favor the classic Horn and its younger cousins. To tell you the truth, and being a big fan of Bird's Eye, I don't see why Cavicchi didn't stamp this pipe as Diamante! Just imagine how large the piece of briar should have been to allow Claudio to make such a piece. Also, look at the incredible, and I mean INCREDIBLE, Crossgrain-Bird's Eye combination! Indeed when talking to Claudio, he confirms the fact that he pays a whole lot more for briar ebauchons that he can used to make this particular shape in this particular size and manner. Considering all the cost and work involved, I guarantee you that Claudio is not even breaking even! If you're considering this pipe, please take a moment and look carefully at the incredibly large dimensions, combined with the rare shape and the fabulous grain. (This pipe is so large and long that it can hardly fit into the standard Cavicchi box without the mouthpiece removed!) To make this point even clearer to you, let me give you a few measurements.- The bowl and shank measure, together, a total length of 122mm (4.8 inches), while the mouthpiece measure 60mm (2.36 inches).
- The bowl rim measures 47mm (1.85 inches), from one side across, and (1.97 inches), from the other.
- The mouthpiece bit is so well made and so slim that it measures a mere 4.5 (0.18 of an inch) in thickness right before the button.
Let me put it another way: If you had a pipe collection of 1,000 pieces, and you had to pick 10 to show your friends and impress them, I bet you anything that this pipe would most definitely be one of them! |
