COMMENT:

I think we both agree that the best and most accurate way to describe this shape is by using the term "Apple", and here I'm talking only about the bowl shape, with no reference whatsoever to the rest of the pipe, mainly the shank. Everything about the bowl shape, from the overall design to the shape of the bowl rim and base, matches the classic parameters of the classic Apple. The shank, on the other hand, it's very, very short, and here I'm talking about the briarwood shank, without counting the shank insert. Unlike most of the wood inserts that Claudio used, this olivewood one comes in a very elaborate shape, but this is not the surprise here. The surprise is that the shank kindly assume an entity of its own, which starts in contrast with the perfectly round and straightforward shank. To accentuate this contrast even more, and in a way to declare his understanding of it, Claudio created a little gap between the briarwood shank and the olivewood shank insert. This touch is quite unusual for Cavicchi, and I must admit it results in a visual effect that I never thought was possible. Somehow, and to my surprise, this little gap doesn't disrupt in any way, shape, or form the visual flow from the shank to the insert. All this is then followed by an elegant Army Mouth Saddle mouthpiece, fitted with an elegant silver band. The grain is very, very worthy of this highest grade, being both tight and consistent all over the pipes. The Bird's Eye on the bowl top and base is a visual symphony!

COMMENT:

If you have been following Cavicchi pipes recently, then you would right away realize that this pipe, while looking familiar, is quite unique and new. Let me explain. Claudio has been making pipes in the Freeform Apple shape AND a square shank for years now, and they have been extremely popular. It is this combination here that should make the pipe look familiar to you. However, what I'm seeing for the first time (and I hope you can say the same!), is the bowl shape itself. Contrary to the Apple bowl shape, Claudio made the bowl into a perfectly spherical (globe-like) shape, and this is the part that add this new dimension to the whole shape definition. To verify my "globe" theory, I measured the bowl diameter from different angle, and the resulting measurement is almost identical at 50mm (1.97 inches)! Surprisingly, you can place the pipe on a flat surface, and leaning on the part of the shank base, the pipe can stay still without any support. I have to admit that the pipe looks even more magnificent in that position, with both the bowl and the mouthpiece completely suspended in mid-air. The grain is most definitely one of this pipe's greatest and strongest points. It's all a wonderful blend of Straight and Flame Grain, with some breathtaking Bird's Eye on the bowl and shank base. The pipe has some incredible amount of wood all over, with truly thick wall, and yet, it's so well-balanced. The elegant tapered mouthpiece is so well made that I'm sure it'll be as comfortable as any mouthpiece you have ever tried. I'm confident it'll be a pleasure to clench on and/or hold in the hand. This is a true work of art, and I sure hope Claudio continues to make this shape for many years to come.

COMMENT:

If I wrote comments to help you buy the right pipe for yourself, I would need nothing but ONE picture to show you how incredible this pipe here is. Actually, no, maybe only a few words. I know you have seen this Cavicchi shape before, in this large size, but I bet you anything, you have never seen it in Cavicchi's highest grade, the 5C grade. I haven't! This Extra, Extra Large and Long Oliphant has become over the past few years one of Cavicchi's most sought-after shapes, and it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, especially those who favor the classic Horn and its younger cousins. To tell you the truth, and being a big fan of Bird's Eye, I don't see why Cavicchi didn't stamp this pipe as Diamante! Just imagine how large the piece of briar should have been to allow Claudio to make such a piece. Also, look at the incredible, and I mean INCREDIBLE, Crossgrain-Bird's Eye combination! Indeed when talking to Claudio, he confirms the fact that he pays a whole lot more for briar ebauchons that he can used to make this particular shape in this particular size and manner. Considering all the cost and work involved, I guarantee you that Claudio is not even breaking even! If you're considering this pipe, please take a moment and look carefully at the incredibly large dimensions, combined with the rare shape and the fabulous grain. (This pipe is so large and long that it can hardly fit into the standard Cavicchi box without the mouthpiece removed!) To make this point even clearer to you, let me give you a few measurements.
  • The bowl and shank measure, together, a total length of 122mm (4.8 inches), while the mouthpiece measure 60mm (2.36 inches).
  • The bowl rim measures 47mm (1.85 inches), from one side across, and (1.97 inches), from the other.
  • The mouthpiece bit is so well made and so slim that it measures a mere 4.5 (0.18 of an inch) in thickness right before the button.
Let me put it another way: If you had a pipe collection of 1,000 pieces, and you had to pick 10 to show your friends and impress them, I bet you anything that this pipe would most definitely be one of them!
