COMMENT:

Since Claudio first made this shape, demand for it has never diminished; actually, it has increased. The fascination with this shape lies in the personally conical, volcano-like bowl, combined with quite a contrasting shape, which is the pyramid-like shape of the shank; add to this the huge olivewood shank extension, and you have an idea of why this shape is so unique and so sought-after. This massive olivewood insert doesn't only show breathtaking grain (unusual for olivewood), but it also comes in a rather large size for an insert. The olivewood part is 22mm in length and 24mm in width (at the base). The story of this particular pipe presented here doesn't end here. The story of the beauty of this pipe does not end here. I cannot do the pipe justice without pointing out the very delicate and regular grain. You see very tight and straight grain all around the bowl, with some staggering Bird's Eye on the bowl base, and of course, the bowl top. Due to the flattened pipe base, the pipe can stand on its own, with no support, on a flat surface; this is always a welcomed features for those who do not always have a pocket pipe rest/stand.

COMMENT:

There is no doubt in my mind that this is currently one of Cavicchi's most elegant shape, especially considering that it comes in a size that allows it to be among the mainstream Cavicchi pipes (as opposed to Flake Pipes). The basic shape is that of an Apple, but this pipes offers so much more than that. The main characteristic here is the evident slant on the bowl base, which, while disrupting the flow of the expected Apple shape, adds a unique touch of elegance to the overall shape design. Another very important feature is the shape of the shank, which is semi-circular. It is thanks to the flat base of the shank and the slanted on the bowl base that the pipe can be seated on a flat surface without support. To make things even more unique, Claudio added a fabulous insert of palm wood, which gives the impression of snake skin (Bird's Eye, that is). The pipe also comes with a Military Mount, and the elegant mouthpiece is fitted with a beautiful silver band. The Flame Grain is well pronounced all around the bowl, and the Bird's Eye on the bowl and shank base is nothing less than breathtaking! Though the pipe, on the outside, may not strike you as a large Cavicchi pipe, it has a tobacco chamber capacity comparable to a Dunhill Group 6, and at the same time, the bowl walls are quite think. Though this is the first time I see this shape from Cavicchi, I have a feeling that we might see it again in the future. This particular one, however, will always be the first I have ever seen or added to my site.

COMMENT:

While the term "Globe", as a shape definition, is not traditional or agreed upon, I find that it is almost intuitive, and that is why I don't hesitate to use it. You see, unlike the Apple, which is the closest in design, the Globe has the same diameter whether you measure it from top to bottom, or from one side to the other. In other words, it looks exactly like a "ball" or a "Globe" (or sphere). The later is my favorite term, since I think it's a lot more refined and elegant than "ball" ;-) The real skill and talent of Cavicchi is seen here in the combination of the perfect spherical shape and the pyramid shape of the shank. The part is results from the meeting of the bowl and shank is usually one of the most delicate parts to shape and get right. This difficulty is doubled, if not more, when the two shapes stand in contrast to one another. Claudio did a magnificent job here making the transition from the spherical bowl to the pyramid-like shank almost effortless and natural. That took a lot of hand sanding and a lot of sandpaper. To add to the basic pipe shape design, Claudio added a massive shank insert of palm wood, with fabulous grain, and complemented it with an Army Mount saddle mouthpiece and a gorgeous silver band. Thanks to the flat shank base, the pipe can stand on its own on a flat surface.
