COMMENT:
This is a shape that Cavicchi introduced only recently, and though it is in high demand, this is only the second one I have managed to get my eyes around. To begin with, this pipe is MASSIVE, particularly when it comes to the tobacco chamber capacity. The bowl is 61mm (2.4 inches) tall and the diameter is 39mm (1.54 inches) . The shank is 51mm (2 inches) long and 31mm (1.22 inches) in diameter. Only the work done on and with the mouthpiece, with its massive acrylic-briarwood insert, would more than justify the price asked here for the entire pipe. The mouthpiece is removed from where the acrylic ring is, which is also part of the mouthpiece; in other words, the shank doesn't have any rings, inserts, of extensions. If you look closely at the logo, you will find it is different from any other, due to usually briar dot being in black acrylic; this is definitely meant to only make the logo stand out more and also add a connection to the mouthpiece itself. The grain is quite excellent all over the pipe, with a combination of Flame Grain and Bird's Eye. Claudio clearly selected a shank insert with excellent grain in order to emphasize the grain on the rest of the pipe. Pipes in the classic Calabash shape have always been in demand, and today they're hard to find, let alone ones that are in such a large size, with such wonderful grain, made by a well known and appreciated pipe makers, and most importantly, offered for such a reasonable price. |
