COMMENT:

I must admit that the use of "Freehand" was simply the easy way out. The shape could be compared to the Dublin, but there are so many other characteristics that deviate from me. The bowl walls are squashed in from the two sides, creating an oval shape. The plateau is present both on the bowl top and the shank end where the mouthpiece joins. The grain is excellent all over, with mainly Flame Grain, and small cluster of Bird's Eye on the bowl base. Judging by the darker color, I asked Wilma if this was an older piece of briar, and the answer was positive. Note also the unique shape of the saddle mouthpiece, with the base (the part closest to the shank) is much longer than on usual ones. For some reason, and don't ask me why, I feel this pipe will prove to be a sweet, cool, and dry smoker.

COMMENT:

It takes courage to make just an enormous pipe into a straight shape! Of course, and no matter how strong your teeth are, you should never, under any circumstances, attempt clenching on this pipe, unless of course, you have high insurance on your teeth and you need the money to buy more pipes from me ;-)
Humor aside, this is a magnificent pipe, of mind-boggling bowl diameter! The pipe was also made of an older piece of briar, according to Wilma, and I can see it. The grain is exceptionally uniform and regular, and the pipe has no bald spots whatsoever. With the exception of a few tiny sandpits on the shank base, I think this pipe is as sandpit-free as they come. In spite of its huge size, the pipe has a relatively small tobacco chamber, which was also shaped into a cone to allow for more even burning. The plateau top is gorgeous. I'll let you examine the pictures closely to get a better idea of the shape itself.

COMMENT:

This pipe is impressive in a lot of ways; let me just tell you the MOST impressive aspect. In spite of the fact that it has such a tall and large bowl (and tobacco chamber), it feels unbelievably light in weight. Indeed, with the exception of the relatively small pipe at the top of the page, this pipe is the lightest in weight (among the giants, that is). This pipe also happens to be the lightest in color, and the rather dark and thick plateau top creates contrast with the pipe color. The grain is good all over, though the "veins" are not as tight as other pipes on this page. To make up for that the pipe shows only 4 tiny sandpits, mainly at the shank base. The pipe comes with an Army Mount, and the saddle mouthpiece should make the pipe relatively comfortable to clench on, if you so desire.

COMMENT:

This is the biggest of all monsters! Not only it is the heaviest on this page, but also the largest. The amount of wood there is makes me wonder where Armellini gets their briar and how much they pay for it! The true story of this pipe, in my opinion, is in the grain, or rather the combination of grain and XXXXL size. The grain is absolutely and stunningly beautiful all over. It is straight all around the bowl, mainly the left-hand side (see first picture on the left, first row). The other incredible fact is that the pipe shows no more than three TINY sandpits, and believe me, you'll have to really look for them. As for the shape, I decided to give up! In other words, the shape is so unusual and complicated that it's safer to let you examine the pictures and decide for yourself. I can only tell you that the combination of large size, gorgeous grain, and intriguing shape would most definitely prove to be a head-turner in the company of other fellow pipes smokers, and non-smokers, to that matter.
