COMMENT:

Here's a beautiful classic shape. I would have added the word "Freeform" only because of the fact that the bowl and shank base is flat, as opposed to "rounded". I changed my mind simply to prove that, on occasion, I don't try to split hairs ;-)
The grain is excellent all over, with very nice Flame Grain all around the bowl, and Bird's Eye on the bowl top. Believe it or not, but I couldn't find any more than one single, tiny sandpit, located on the bowl top! The distinctive feature here is the shank extension which itself has an elegant briar insert. While the mouthpiece may be slightly thicker than I would have wanted it to be, I still believe that the pipe can be clenched on with no major discomfort. Naturally, the pipe sits still on a flat surface. As for the tobacco chamber size, I would compare it to a Dunhill Group 4.

COMMENT:

I guess the name Armellini has given this pipe, "SUPREMA", already says a lot about the pipe and its quality. While the grain is not very uniform, it is quite "clean". There are a few tiny sandpits, but it's not that easy to spot them. The color is the lightest I have seen on an Armellini pipe, and I'm sure it'll darken beautifully with the smoking. As for the shape, I believe Stack/Chimney is indeed the right definition due to the bowl height (59mm) which is a lot more in height than the shank is in length (37mm). Thanks to the slim tapered mouthpiece, I strongly believe this will be an extremely comfortable pipe to clench on. The tobacco chamber is larger than any Dunhill Group 6 I have ever seen (check out the measurements).

COMMENT:

If you're wondering why this pipe weighs 77g, let me tell you. It has SO MUCH wood, with a bowl base as thick as a staggering 19mm. The shape is indeed the classic Brandy, and as a bonus, the bowl base is flat to allow the pipe to stand on its own on a flat surface. The grain is excellent all over, with some nice Bird's Eye on the bowl base and the thin bowl top. The tapered mouthpiece has the briar inserts which seem to be associated with the name "La-Cometa". I counted only a couple of very tiny sandpits, which is quite impressive for a pipe at this low price. As for the tobacco chamber size, I would say it's similar to a Dunhill Group 5.

COMMENT:

This is an absolutely gorgeous shape, made out of an excellent piece of briar. The shape can only be described as a Calabash; indeed, I see it more so than the shape that Armellini calls "Calabash"! What is unusual about this one, and indeed, it's the only one in this entire Armellini selection that has it, is the most elegant silver inserts in the shank; these are made to replace the wood ones in the case of La-Cometa, at no extra cost to the end buyer! Let me tell you about the cleaner story. These pipes were made to accommodate a 9mm filter, but in order for me to sell them, I asked Wilma Armellini to fit them with a filter adapter. Now, the pipe is drilled extremely well, extremely. Without the filter adapter, a cleaner goes through it like a hot knife through butter, but it encounters problems when you put the adapter in place. Having said that, and in this case, and considering that the pipe was drilled that well, the failure of a cleaner to run though the pipe is not indicative of a problem.

COMMENT:

You might be wondering why I decided to call this a Dublin as opposed to a Calabash. Well, as far as I understand the differences between these two shapes, the Calabash presents a bigger difference in diameter between the bowl rim and base; in other word, the Calabash should be more conical than the bent Dublin. Moreover, the Calabash is usually fully bent, whereas this one is only a quarter bent. Apart from all that, the pipe's main characteristic is definitely the elaborate, classic, rare Army Mount, with all the silver work that the classic definition prescribes. This is indeed a rare treat! The grain is exceptional all over, with delicate, uniform Flame Grain around the bowl and gorgeous Bird's Eye on the bowl top. The tobacco chamber is very large, and it most definitely goes beyond any Dunhill Group.
