COMMENT:

This pipe combines elements that are both classic and innovative. Note that the shank is diamond-shaped and so is the mouthpiece, which is a feature of the classic Bulldog. On the other hand, it has one groove running around the bowl, but perfectly half way down, unlike in the case of the classic Bulldog, where the grooves (yes, two) run about one third down the bowl. The pipe has quite a large tobacco chamber, and yet it feels so light in weight. At the same time, it has quite thick walls. Note the elaborate briar insert in the mouthpiece.

COMMENT:

I rarely get to describe a shape as Brandy, simply because they don't seem to come by as often as in the bygone days. You may wish to call it Volcano, but for now, I'll stick with Brandy. Thanks to the flattened bowl base, the pipe can sit on a flat surface on its own. I find the rustication here quite intriguing: It's rather coarse, and yet it feels so soft. The inscribed silver band does add a lot of elegance to the overall shape and creates nice contrast with the dark red-black of the bowl. The tobacco chamber is comparable to a Dunhill Group 5.

COMMENT:

There are so many unusual features here, but let me just mention a couple. First, the bowl (and tobacco chamber) is HUGE, and yet the pipe is truly of feather weight, and it feels so well balanced in the hand. In addition, the bowl is slightly pushed in from the two sides, creating a slightly oval shape. Finally, what came as a surprise to me is the fact that the pipe has a flat bowl base which allows it to stand on its own, with perfect stability and balance.

COMMENT:

At first I thought this is indeed a perfect Apple shape, but when I examined it more closely, the Billiard popped up, and rightly so. I guess the whole point of an Apple is the more obvious inward inclination of the upper part of the bowl, which is done only slightly here. Having said that I think this is the most classic of the pipes on this page. Note also the beautiful brown-red-orange color used on this one. The bowl top is only given a natural color stain. I also love the tapered mouthpiece, which is one of the reasons why, at least to me, the pipe looks so classic. I would compare the tobacco chamber to that of a Dunhill Group 6.
