COMMENT:

"Chubby Dublin" is a major understatement here, but I ran out of room! I was tempted to describe it as a Freehand, but Dublin is written all over it. On the other hand, it's not your typical true Dublin, due to the huge difference in diameter between the bowl rim and base, and also the canted forwarded bowl. Add to this the fact that the pipe comes with its plateau top, and you start understanding why I'm not happy with "Chubby Dublin". What is very interesting, in addition, is the incredibly conical tobacco chamber: It starts at 25mm at the rim and goes down to what is estimated to be a few millimeters, in a distance of 50mm, which is the tobacco chamber depth! I must express how impressed I am with the mouthpiece; it's made extremely well, and though its diameter at the joint with the shank is 21mm, it reaches a thinness of 4.5mm at the bit.

COMMENT:

I understand that a simple "Freeform Bell" is an understatement, especially considering that the Bell itself is a variation of the Dublin. However, this is the closest it can get to a more precise shape definition than a simple "Freehand". Note the pointed bowl base, which could qualify the pipe to the traditional "Pointed Bent". Anyway, the pipe is huge, and in this case, the elegant tapered mouthpiece is most befitting. Note also the conical shank, and of course, the tobacco chamber, which starts at a diameter of 23mm at the top and goes down to a mere few millimeters in a distance of 49mm, which is the tobacco chamber depth.

COMMENT:

This is one of Armellini's most distinguished shapes. As you can see, the bowl is that of the Calabash (or classic Dublin), but slightly more slender and much taller. The whole idea lies in the shank, which is extra long and bent and fitted with a short tapered mouthpiece. I was stunned by how effortlessly a cleaner flew through the entire mouthpiece and pipe. This is not a pipe I would recommend if you like to clench on your pipes, the reason being that the mouthpiece is quite thick, and I don't think that it'll be comfortable to clench on. The rustication is quite even and uniform, and the combination of black and red does make the pipe quite elegant.

COMMENT:

I guess the name Armellini has given this pipe, "SUPREMA", already says a lot about the pipe and its quality. While the grain is not very uniform, it is quite "clean". There are a few tiny sandpits, but it's not that easy to spot them. The color is the lightest I have seen on an Armellini pipe, and I'm sure it'll darken beautifully with the smoking. As for the shape, I believe Stack/Chimney is indeed the right definition due to the bowl height (59mm) which is a lot more in height than the shank is in length (37mm). Thanks to the slim tapered mouthpiece, I strongly believe this will be an extremely comfortable pipe to clench on. The tobacco chamber is larger than any Dunhill Group 6 I have ever seen (check out the measurements).

COMMENT:

If you're wondering why this pipe weighs 77g, let me tell you. It has SO MUCH wood, with a bowl base as thick as a staggering 19mm. The shape is indeed the classic Brandy, and as a bonus, the bowl base is flat to allow the pipe to stand on its own on a flat surface. The grain is excellent all over, with some nice Bird's Eye on the bowl base and the thin bowl top. The tapered mouthpiece has the briar inserts which seem to be associated with the name "La-Cometa". I counted only a couple of very tiny sandpits, which is quite impressive for a pipe at this low price. As for the tobacco chamber size, I would say it's similar to a Dunhill Group 5.

COMMENT:

This is an absolutely gorgeous shape, made out of an excellent piece of briar. The shape can only be described as a Calabash; indeed, I see it more so than the shape that Armellini calls "Calabash"! What is unusual about this one, and indeed, it's the only one in this entire Armellini selection that has it, is the most elegant silver inserts in the shank; these are made to replace the wood ones in the case of La-Cometa, at no extra cost to the end buyer! Let me tell you about the cleaner story. These pipes were made to accommodate a 9mm filter, but in order for me to sell them, I asked Wilma Armellini to fit them with a filter adapter. Now, the pipe is drilled extremely well, extremely. Without the filter adapter, a cleaner goes through it like a hot knife through butter, but it encounters problems when you put the adapter in place. Having said that, and in this case, and considering that the pipe was drilled that well, the failure of a cleaner to run though the pipe is not indicative of a problem.

COMMENT:

It takes courage to make just an enormous pipe into a straight shape! Of course, and no matter how strong your teeth are, you should never, under any circumstances, attempt clenching on this pipe, unless of course, you have high insurance on your teeth and you need the money to buy more pipes from me ;-)
Humor aside, this is a magnificent pipe, of mind-boggling bowl diameter! The pipe was also made of an older piece of briar, according to Wilma, and I can see it. The grain is exceptionally uniform and regular, and the pipe has no bald spots whatsoever. With the exception of a few tiny sandpits on the shank base, I think this pipe is as sandpit-free as they come. In spite of its huge size, the pipe has a relatively small tobacco chamber, which was also shaped into a cone to allow for more even burning. The plateau top is gorgeous. I'll let you examine the pictures closely to get a better idea of the shape itself.
